About the Author
Ben Chenoweth lived in St. Petersburg, Russia with his wife and two children for almost ten years. He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia where he works at the Melbourne School of Theology as their eLearning Coordinator. He enjoys reading, writing, music and playing computer games in equal measures. He has a particular interest in the intersection between theology and the arts.

His first novel, Meeting of Minds, dealt with exploring the galaxy through virtual reality. Later, he wrote a play based on the life of Saul entitled Saul, First King of Israel. His most recent novel, The Ephesus Scroll concerns the discovery in Russia of an ancient scroll of the book of Revelation. He also wrote a musical based on the Biblical book of Esther (a free download of the 1998 performance at Lilydale Baptist Church is available on NoiseTrade).

Yes, this is where I was when I began my quest to learn about Reiki, massage therapy, and other wellness avenues. I wanted to know more about natural healing and exercise. I was curious as to what exactly Reiki was--what it involved, and I wanted to know if it actually worked for people. I was looking for a reliable source. So, I purchased The Japanese Art of Reiki in the hopes that it would answer some basic questions. The book, which primarily focuses on self-examination, self-discipline, and self-practice, proved to be an excellent choice in that regard. Though it is a small book, it is full of thought-provoking ideas, probing questions, suggestions, and practices, which offer a genuine, doable introductory approach for the person seeking more about this intriguing art of mind/body oneness. Photos illustrate the moves and positions for different applications / meditations.There are many great sections in this book; however, the one that resonated with me the most is the one about "The Five Precepts": For Today Only...Do not anger...Do not worry...Be humble...Be honest in your work...Be compassionate to yourself and others (Pages 67-76). If you can actively follow that sage advice each day, you can handle whatever comes your way. I find myself repeating these while I am driving to work in the morning...a quick form of meditation.I also enjoyed inspiring "Tale of Sato," the story of a depressed lady who discovered healing, a renewed life, through Reiki. This is a fairly short book but it does get into the social structure and changes leading to Usui bring forth Reiki. This my favorite Reiki book. I originally learned Reiki in Japan. This book does a great job at bringing Reiki back to its original roots.

There is a lot of wonderful information in this book. The history and origins of Reiki are very important and well-covered here - and it's a recent history - very accessible. I am fairly old school and I believe it's important to know the foundations of a practice and to also know how it has been transformed and why. I also tend to use what works for me - but only after I have learned, fairly thoroughly; only then can I embellish or personalize.The authors would probably praise my intent. And that is where I come to my rating. The book is almost difficult to read at times - the opinions are very strict and it isn't necessary that they be expressed in such an unyielding tone. The tone is incongruous with the content. I would read some other volumes first if you are starting out or simply work with a good teacher. But then come back to this one.Kindle readers - the story of Sato cannot be zoomed in on - you will need a magnifying glass.

I have been a Reiki practitioner for over a decade. Am an Usui Tibetan Reiki Master as well as a Karuna Reiki Master. For the past year or so, I felt as though something was missing- and that there was more to Reiki than what I had learned. I had been introduced to the 'hands on' aspect of traditional Reiki techniques over a year ago, but still had this nagging 'knowingness' that there was more to discover. A friend of mine recommended this book, and after reading it, I believe it contains the answers I was looking for. The disillusionment I had been experiencing with Western styles, and the 'emptiness' of the techniques now have a solid foundation and explanation. This book opens up the possibility for a personal journey and transformation that you will not find through the techniques taught in the West, and I highly recommend it.

Before reading this book and "Animal Reiki: Using Energy to Heal the Animals in Your Life" I thought Reiki only worked on people who believed in it and I have to see or feel something before I can believe. My one session with a Reiki practitioner was disappointing because I felt nothing. After reading this book I now think maybe more healing actually occurred than I was aware of at the time.

As a Reiki practitioner, I appreciate that this book provides information about the Japanese roots of Reiki.

I had to put this one down a couple of times. Not because I disagreed with it but because it was so profound and I needed to fully comprehend how important the points where. Be prepared to have your spiritual life change as a result of reading this book. I can't recommend it enough.

This book is intense. If you have never read anything on Purgatory then please don't start with this book. This book is geared more for Catholics who are already praying for the poor souls in Purgatory. If you are looking for a book that deals more with how scripture supports the existence of Purgatory, I might suggest you read the "Biblical Basis for Purgatory" by John Salza. If you have never read anything about Purgatory and have lots of questions about it, I suggest reading "Get Us Out of Here" by Nicky Eltz and Maria Simma. After you have read those books or other ones then read this one.This book wakes you up about the pains of Purgatory. The author has compiled numerous I witness accounts from the lives of the holy saints and other creditable sources to show the details, the location, the amount of time one can spend there, the terrible pains, the physical evidence that poor souls have left behind, what we can do to avoid it, and how we can provide relief to the poor souls in Purgatory. These souls know they are saved and choose to be purified there rather than be blemished in the presence of God. (See Hebrews 12:1-29 and Rev 21:27)I strongly recommend reading this book as it will make your prayers and devotion to our Lord Jesus more fervent. God Bless!

Covers the teachings on Purgatory as well as how greatly we benefit from helping souls there. We have no idea how much souls suffer there, and they are often quickly forgotten at death. The book explains how to help them, with story after story on how the saints have done so. Christianity is a team sport, and we work together, we on earth praying for them and they in Purgatory praying for us. The stories are magnificent and very inspiring. Couldnâ€™t put the book down. On my short list of spiritual reading favorites. Biblical quotes throughout.

This is a very comprehensive look at the apparitions of various Saints whose visions of Purgatory are explained, and the book also provides insights as to where Purgatory is and the various levels of Purgatory. There is also much reading about devotions on behalf of the Holy Souls. The author also details the ways we can employ to lessen our Purgatory or avoid it completely, all of which are within our reach. I would recommend this book.

This is the best book on Purgatory that I have ever read. I bought this book in the early 1970's and then passed it on to someone else because it was so good. Years later, in the early 2000's I bought another copy to read it again. Now, I have purchased an ebook copy. It is so enlightening! If I could, I would give it a 10-Star rating.
